About our Therapy Practice in Homewood

Sheila Burgess, LPC

Sheila is a licensed professional counselor and clinical psychology doctoral candidate who believes that our experiences inform who we are but do not define who we are capable of becoming.

Sheila thrives in collaborating with adults who are challenged by complex mental health issues including mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders, and trauma or stress-related disorders.

Sheila is committed to a whole-person approach to wellness that considers mind, body, and spirit while relying upon evidence-based practices to help clients explore their potential. She believes strongly in the efficacy of cognitive-behavior-based interventions and their practical integration with therapies that support emotional exploration.

Sheila’s clinical focus includes mood disorders (bipolar disorder, depression, seasonal affective disorder), anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, social anxiety disorder), neurodevelopmental disorders (autismspectrum, ADHD), and trauma and stress-related disorders.

Sheila holds a master’s degree in Counseling from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and is currently a doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology from National Louis University. Prior to her journey into counseling/therapy, Sheila enjoyed a lengthy career in the corporate sector, collaborating with organizational leaders to define large-scale organizational change and learning strategies.

Her passion for people and for enabling sustainable behavior change fostered a deep desire to engage with local community outreach programs. It is through these outreach experiences that Sheila developed an enduring commitment to working with individuals and within communities where mental health challenges are often manifested as violence, addiction, homelessness, and underemployment.

Sheila is a sci-fi enthusiast (Trekkie) and music lover. She enjoys the experience of international travel and loves photo journaling interesting architecture.
